History of basketball in America

Basketball is an American game that is now played and enjoyed by million people of all ages all around the world. The popularity of the game has reached to new heights.  The game was originated by a Canadian educator and sports recreationalist, James Naismith when he was in need of an indoor sport. It all started in December, 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. His students tend to play football, soccer, etc. throughout the year. But during the chilly winters, it was not possible to play outside.

James Naismith did not want to compromise with the health of his students this was the reason he wanted to invent an indoor game which keep the young men engaged. It is assumed that Naismith thought about a game ‘duck on a rock’ and recalled rugby when he invented this game. Alexander Wolff has mentioned in his book, ‘100 Years of Hoops’ that Naismith set down the rules of this game within an hour. Most of the rules of basketball are applied in today in the equivalent form.

Initially, only the students of high schools and colleges take part in basketball. But in 1949, the National Basketball Association (NBA) was set up with total eight teams. Afterward, the American Basketball Association (ABA) was formed in 1967. But it was only lasted about nine years because of some monetary issue.

The former competitive basketball league was formed with domestic leagues include east coast cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. The first known professional basketball game was help in Trenton New Jersey between the Trenton YMCA and the Brooklyn YMCA in November 1896. At that time, each player got $15 dollars. However, Fred Cooper became the first highest paid player because he obtained $16 dollars. Trenton was the winner by 15-1 in the first ever formal basketball game.

After two years, this game was played by 6 teams for Philadelphia and New Jersey formed the National basketball league (NBL). The basketball players received $2.50 for home games and $1.25 for games on the road when the foremost formal confederacy was established in 1898.

Naismith’s heritage incorporated the first college basketball coach, Forrest “Phog” Allen who played for Naismith at the University of Kansas. He won 771 games as a coach at Kansas. Wilt Chamberlain was one of the best Allen’s players, who became one of professional basketball players.  He achieved a record 100 points in a game once in 1962.

Originated by Naismith Basketball began to extend its popularity not only in the United States but all over the world.
